So i’m rushing to get my clutchtogether and we’ve hit a bump. The flywheel I got from CJ Pony parts has dowels that don’t match the holes from the pressure plate.

The dowel holes don’t match, but the size and the bolt holes do. Can I get away without the dowels. Or do I need to suck it up and just find another flywheel ?

EDIT: got an answer from roommates brother. We’re just going to line up the holes and bolt the pressure plate to the the flywheel. I'll update you guys this afternoon how things go.

Are you sure its not just the orientation? The last car I did a clutch on the pressure plate only fitted one way (ie the dowels aren’t symetrical so certain bolt holes corresponded to each other.) I’ve probably explained that horribly but yeah...

I would get one with proper dowels. You REALLY don’t want to have your pressure plate unbalanced. The dowels are supposed to do the locating, so if you just bolt it on, chances are that it will be unbalanced. That unbalance will wreak havoc on your crankshaft main bearings nearest to the back of the motor eventually wearing them out early.

Sometimes these flywheels have multiple locations you can put the dowel pins so see if there are a set of holes that line up with the dowel openings on your pressure plate. Move those pins if they’re there.

there’s a Wheeler Dealer episode where Ed makes his own DIY clutch plate dowel using a large bolt, then uses masking? wrapped around to get the right diameter he needs to line up a clutch plate correctly.

Seemed to work dandy for him

Definitely noted, odds that doesn’t work is that I’ll mark where the dowels are supposed to line up and bolt according to the orientation of the markings.

I have a class so I have time to figure something out... I just need the car to cross the state by tonight =_+
